See, a successful store will be buzzing with customers all of whom want certain items – ice creams, chickens, bread, vegetables, milk etc., and you’ll have to keep a keen eye on what is selling out so you can make sure it is refilled. So you play as Nikki and your main goal is to make sure that the shelves of the supermarket are stocked at all time. There’s a forgettable soundtrack here – which is actually kind of fitting, since actual supermarkets tend to play forgettable background noise, and the only sound effects you’ll really be hearing are the whistles of your security guard stopping thieves and the giggling of children running in the aisles.Īn interesting time-management game masquerading among some light business sim elements, Supermarket Mania is a fun afternoon’s distraction. and they’re not the most fluid, but there’s a certain busy energy to everything which is fun to watch (helped by the fact that the game as a whole runs smoothly no matter what’s happening on screen). You’ll see the same few shopper sprites over and over – old ladies, young kids etc. The interiors of the supermarkets change over time as you work your way up, but generally they all have the same features – shelves of fish, fruit and sweets which slowly deplete as shoppers move around and pick up things. It’s a shame this isn’t a Vita-native title as they’d be perfect for touch-screen use too, navigating with the d-pad is a bit of a faff – this would also have been nice for the comic-book style panels which tell the story, which again look fine but would’ve been nicer to move around with touch controls.Įlsewhere, you’ll spend most of your time looking at the gameplay screen, which is functional. My least favourite feature here is probably the menus – they’re so obviously designed for mobile (which of course is the case, as this was originally a phone title) meaning there’s big blocks and stars and they just generally look a bit tacky.

With basic features but colourful presentation, Supermarket Mania certainly isn’t pushing any graphical boundaries on PSP but it gets the job done with style all the same. With that said, there’s a nice happy, community feel to everything in the game – watching Nikki and her friends slowly work their way up is enjoyable, meaning that despite the simple elements it all comes together well. While you’ll be given little snippets of plot and are introduced to a handful of different characters (including the amusingly named security guard Mr Barefist), there’s not much else to the plot here – it’s basically the story of how David beat Goliath. After she gets fired from her job due to Torg replacing all the workers with robots, Nikki and her ex-colleague decide to set up a rival business selling groceries, with the goal of defeating Torg at their own game and showing the value of individuality in a cut-throat industry.
